This year’s CATESOL Bay Area Chapter professional development event will offer a full-circle experience, offering fresh ideas on how to leverage your teaching practice and help students.  Beginning with a special interactive session on applying the latest brain science to teaching, offering a choice of workshops, and a panel discussion on the future of teacher preparation in the field of TESOL, the day’s events will have meaningful opportunities whether you work in K-12, adult ed, intensive, or academia. Looking for a job?  Learn more about the various paths available in the field of TESOL.  There will be social networking time, including a light breakfast and lunch, which are included in the cost of registration!

Special Guest Presentation:  Applying the Science of Learning in Language-Focused Practice;  an experiential workshop by  Joshua Kurzweil, Teacher at the International Education Center at Diablo College, and a Teacher-Trainer with  SIT/World Learning.

Workshops

Cristin Boyd  –  “Academic Discussion Skills for Intermediate Adult Learners”

 

Presentation will support teachers in providing strategies in working with adult   students for authentic academic experiences to be well-prepared for required participation through speech and conversation.

Doreen Ewert, USF –  “Using observations and lesson plans for changing jobs”

Lesson plans can be a powerful tool for presenting your philosophy of teaching, your practical pedagogical knowledge, and your commitment to language learners and learning. In this session, participants will analyze and revise some example lesson plans to best represent themselves for use in a teaching portfolio.

Judith O’Loughlin – “Planning Science Lessons & Experiments for English Learners”

Addressing the Next Generation Science Standards for ELLs with informational text in visuals and narration of picture books supports the comprehension of technical vocabulary, discipline-specific concepts, and provides opportunities for hands-on practice.  The presenter models the National Science Teachers Association 5E lesson plan, including hands-on experiments, using picture books.

Gregory Keech, Chair, Department of English as a Second Language, City College of San Francisco

“Teaching at a community college: How do you feel about teaching Literacy at 8:00 a.m. and advanced composition at 10:00 a.m.?”

Community colleges offer a wide array of programs to all kinds of students. Some colleges focus on credit instruction; more and more are offering both credit and noncredit. City College of San Francisco is one of the latter, and this session will familiarize you with our ESL hiring process and our concept of the ideal candidate. If your answer to the title question was “Great!” we want to hear from you.

David Wiese, USF  –  “Forget the war on cell phones: How to engage students with technology-based tasks”

Research shows instructors are fighting a losing battle against the use of cell phones in class. Some advocate harsher deterrents, but there is a more peaceful – and pedagogically effective – approach. In this workshop, learn how instructors can convert students’ electronic devices into tools of engagement and education with technology-based tasks.

George Irving, Lincoln High School  –  “Managing Workload in the Composition Classroom”

ESL composition teachers often feel overwhelmed by the workload involved with writing assignments. This presentation will give an overview of how to set up a classroom climate that allows processes of student involvement and accountability for their own learning while simultaneously practicing composition, grammar, and oral skills. An acute awareness of  every aspect of the writing process is arrived at with reduced assessment  time as a consequence.

About Our Presenter: Noriko Ishihara, Ph. D. teaches EFL/TESOL at Hosei University in Tokyo  and is currently a visiting professor at the University of California Davis. She leads professional development courses in instructional pragmatics at various institutions in Japan and the U.S.  Her research interests include pragmatics and discourse, identity and language learning, language teacher development, and peace linguistics. She is a co­-author of Teaching and Learning Pragmatics: Where language and culture meet (2010/2014, with Andrew D. Cohen) and its second edition in Japanese (2015).

Theater as a Weapon of Knowledge:

Increasing agency, effectiveness, and critical consciousness
in language learning through embodied, problem-posing education

The CATESOL Bay Area Chapter and the SFSU M.A. TESOL Student Association are pleased to invite you to the first TESOL Talk event of the 2016-2017, a free, engaging and interactive special workshop event featuring Prof. Jiwon Chung:

Theater is one of the most potent tools for learning and teaching language: it engages the whole body, stimulates thought and action in context, engages the senses, imagination, and feelings, explores character & identity, and is a laboratory for communication, relationship, and power. In this interactive workshop, Professor Jiwon Chung will share a wide set of tools and concepts for language acquisition from Applied Theater and Theatre of the Oppressed. This will show how the critical, dialogical approach of Theater of the Oppressed, and its embodied, constructivist, problem posing approach empowers learners to construct and relate to the world as effective learning agents through language. Interactive games, imaginative and sensory exercises, body sculptures/tableaux, zero scenes, theatrical problem-posing, intention gap exercises, storytelling, devising, power analysis, and other dynamic, embodied, theatrical tools will be shared and explored. Participants should come away with a dynamic set of tools and approaches to use with learners and to reenergize their classes, as well as an understanding of how to apply critical and popular pedagogies in curriculum development.

‘Developing Connections, Connecting To Develop’
San Francisco, CA

This CATESOL Bay Area Chapter offered a full circle experience focusing on establishing and building professional networks while providing tips and methods for incorporating professional development into a busy teaching schedule. Designed by the chapter Board with direct contributions from members, the sold-out event engaged attendees through professional, academic, and social activities. Attendees left the event with a better understand of how to build community networks for ongoing professional development with colleagues. The event wrapped up with a constructive networking lunch to close the development and connections loop.

Building and Enhancing Pronunciation Proficiency

A half-day mini-conference for ESL teachers at all levels focusing on the teaching of pronunciation, with an added focus on how to use technology in this instruction. Concurrent workshops and presentations on teaching pronunciation and combining it with technology will take place every hour.

This hands-on workshop led by five practitioners focused on using interactive whiteboards in the classroom. This workshop was designed for K-12 and adult level ESL teachers, and it was appropriate for all levels of knowledge and experience with interactive whiteboards, from novice to advanced. Blogs and wikis are easy-to-use technology tools that can help move your teaching in new directions. In this hands-on workshop, we covered the basics of blogs and wikis and how these Web 2.0 tools can be woven into your teaching practices. Participants viewed sample blogs and wikis, collaborated on a sample wiki, and worked on short projects.

This was a hands-on workshop held at Alliant International University in San Francisco, directed to all teachers interested in word learning, demonstrating:
•    Word Learning Strategies
•    Applying Vocabulary Learning to State Standards
•    Fostering Learner Autonomy

In this workshop, teachers learned how to foster learner autonomy by encouraging students to become independent word learners. You can read about the workshop on page 13 in the Summer 2010 edition of CATESOL News.

Using Stories for Learner-Centered Practice

San Francisco State University and the Center for Immigrant and Refugee Community Literacy Education (CIRCLE)

This day-long institute included a keynote presentation by Professor Weinstein, workshop, networking lunch, small-group collaboration by level, and a closing reception. It was targeted towards teachers with interests in academic and non-academic adult ESL, secondary ESL, and EFL contexts.

Participants explored possibilities for using learners’ own stories to help them master the mechanics of language, create meaning through conversation and writing, elicit new stories, and build community within and across classroom walls. Teachers were encouraged to bring learner-centered principles and project-based learning into their teaching, curriculum, and program design.

Almost 90 participants attended this mini-conference at Alliant International University in San Francisco where the theme was pairing presentations on similar topics for a more in-depth look at subjects in English language teaching. The culmination of the event included a reception with a variety of international finger foods and wine, as well as a raffle of wonderful gifts from the publishers.
